Translation of the German review:
Is it allowed to interpret Mozart's music with a big band? Let me put it this way: when 22 musicians are united and perform it with fun and skill, it is daring on the one hand, but on the other it is something very special. Staged by the arrangers Christoph Cech and Christian Mühlbacher, this is first and foremost big band jazz. The salt in the soup are the rich and varied variations and improvisations, played under the direction of tenor saxophonist Christian Kornreif. Of course, there are also shimmering brass sections typical of a big band, whose dynamic attacks from the tape are a particular delight. At high volume, you can really "let the cow fly" with this recording. In addition to the jazz power numbers, the orchestral devotional moments are of monumental beauty, such as the tracks "Figure It Out!" versus "Preachin'".
The enclosed booklet contains details about the recording: "Recording this delight was initially a logistical challenge for us: in order to minimize crosstalk, the wind instruments, drums and the rest of the rhythm section were recorded in separate rooms. We used a total of 38 microphones and tested the limits of a Neve mixing console with 96(!) channels when mixing. And alongside so much modern technology, we relied on tried and tested equipment: In order to make the wind instruments sound as lively and lively as possible, an old spring reverb (!), built in 1971, was used".
The Quinton specialists Andreas Rathammer (recording, mixing) and Heinrich Schläfer (mastering) create a very balanced sound. All in all, this production is spectacularly well done for my taste, making it my highlight of the AAA master tape series. Look forward to 60 minutes of the best entertainment!
